600 Meter Race

This was such an exciting afternoon!! Travis and Allyson both participated in the annual 600 Meter run that is held before the Apache Invitational cross country track meet. 600 meters is almost four tenths of a mile; it is 1.5 laps around a track (I had NO idea how far this amount was until Darren told me. All I know is that RUNNING--any amount--sounds like agony.)

Allyson brought home the information for the run on Friday afternoon, and she was full of excitement. She got a little nervous about the run on Saturday, but once she found out that her friend Emma would be running, she decided that she could handle it. Travis said that he did not want to run, but he changed his mind about 5 minutes before registration ended. **shaking my head** He ended up coming in 3rd place out of about 21 runners in his age group. Allyson came in 5th or 6th place out of about 32 kids for her age group.

Travis said that the race was easy, and that it was too short. Easy???? Too short???? I'm grinning at the thought of me saying that 600 meters is 'easy' and 'too short.' I'd be out of breath and in pain. Travis is a really good runner, and he will do well in track, especially long distances. He can run right at 2 miles (with a short walking break). He never gives up and always gives 100% in all of the athletic things that he does. I am always so proud of his positive attitude.

After the race, Allyson told me that she was disappointed that the race wasn't longer. When I asked her why, she said, "Mom, I was in the zone! If I could have run longer, I would have smoked the competition!" I don't know where she gets this "prissy" attitude, but I'm so glad that she has confidence!! She is a great runner and has terrific form. She can easily run one mile without stopping and getting tired. She says that she wants to run cross country when she gets older.

Knowing my kids and their love of sports, I'm sure that Darren and I will be sitting at MANY track meets cheering for them as they run across the finish line.
