September '07 Reading List

Several of my friends and I "belong" to a LOSTie bookworm club. My sweet friend Kim started this reading group, and once a month we share a list of books that we've read. It is a great way to find new authors and hear other people's opinions about certain books.

This is the MOST books I've been able to read in one month in a VERY long time. Since the kids started school, I've had more time to read. Also, the first 2 books on my list are very quick reads.

How do I rate these books?
1 star: hated it…….3 stars: enjoyed it…….5 stars: loved it.

1. Dark Prince by Christine Feehan. This is the first book in the Carpathian (Dark) Series. The Carpathians fight vampires and search for true love…. I have to say that it is an EASY book to read because it has a simple story line and is very repetitive. In my opinion, it’s not a ‘sit on the edge of your seat and bite your fingernails’ type of book, but I plan to read the series. It reminded me of Harlequin romance books. (fiction) 2 stars

2. Dark Desire by Christine Feehan. Book #2 in the Carpathian Dark series. Same plot as the first book, different characters. Predictable, but I enjoyed it more than the first book. (fiction) 3 stars

3. Dark Descent (short story) by Christine Feehan. I *really* enjoyed this story! It has the same plot and basic dialogue as the first 2 books. (fiction) 4 stars

4. The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks. This is a strange story that I did not particularly like. It turns out that it is the first book in the Fourth Realm trilogy, but I don’t think I’ll read the other books. It is about an alternate reality where the government wants a perfectly controlled population. There is a small group of people called Harlequins, and they are fighters that defend a group of people called Travelers. Travelers are able to leave their bodies and visit other realms. (fiction) 2 stars

5. Disciplines of the Home by Anne Ortmund This book offers practical advice on raising children in a Christian home. I enjoyed the bible verses that the author would tie to her advice, but, since the book was published in 1990, I found that many of her stories and non-biblical references were outdated. (Christian Nonfiction) 3 stars

6. Predator by Patricia Cornwell This is book 14 in the Kay Scarpetta series. Scarpetta is a former medical examiner that is currently freelancing at the National Forensics Academy in Florida. She and her team investigate gruesome crimes. (fiction) 3.5 stars

7. Hour Game by David Baldacci This is the 2nd book that features the characters King and Maxwell. It is about a serial killer that is replicating murders of infamous killers. (fiction) 4 stars

8. American Outrage by Tim Green. A news correspondent tries to find his adoptive son’s birth mother, and becomes a victim of violence as he uncovers events that were best left alone. Imo, this isn’t the best T. Green book, but I still enjoyed it. (fiction) 3.5 stars
